Italian Beginners · Week 1A · Lesson 1
We are learning to greet people at different times of day and to say our name.
Play, students echo twice. Press E to show the English.
Come ti chiami?
What is your name?
Students say it before you press E.
Mi chiamo Sara.
My name is Sara.
Students say it before you press E.
E tu?
And you?
Students say it before you press E.
Piacere!
Nice to meet you!
Students say it before you press E.
Italian often leaves out io (I) and tu (you): the verb ending already tells you who.
Mi chiamo = my name is (literally, I call myself). Ti chiami = your name is.
| io | mi chiamo | my name is |
| tu | ti chiami | your name is |
| lui · lei | si chiama | his · her name is |
Come ti chiami? · What is your name?
Lei si chiama Anna. · Her name is Anna.
Lui si chiama Marco. · His name is Marco.
Say each greeting; students echo twice.
Sound rule: c before i or e sounds like ch in “church” (ciao, piacere).
Name chain round the group: “Mi chiamo… E tu?”
Which greeting? Show a clock time; students say the greeting.
