Read the explanation, find the pattern in this week's texts, then practise it.

Attach います to the て-form of a verb to describe an action happening right now.

This pattern also describes an ongoing state, such as where you live or what clothes someone is wearing.

Use it in self-introductions and descriptions of friends and family.

Verb (~て form) + いますis doing / is in the state of doing (polite)
住んでいますlives in (place + に)
きていますis wearing (top/dress/sweater + を)

Part E · Culture · Thanking neighbours and expressing favours with ~てくださって

Read, then answer the question.

In Japan, maintaining good relations with next-door neighbours (となり) is an important part of daily life. When a neighbour helps out, such as looking after a pet during the holidays, people express gratitude with polite language. In the listening text, the woman says せわをしてくださって、ありがとうございました (Thank you for kindly looking after my cats). Adding くださる to the て-form shows respect and acknowledges that the other person did a kind favour for the speaker.

How do people in your neighbourhood help each other when someone goes away on holiday, and how do they usually say thank you?
